Episode 4: FROM VATNAJÖKULL TO LANDMANNALAUGAR
The Coast of the Thaw
The fourth and final episode travels along southern Iceland, a stretch of land where volcanic activity, great glaciers and fluvial erosion have created some of the island’s most dynamic landscapes. In the surroundings of Vatnajökull, glacial lagoons such as Fjallsárlón and ice fronts that feed waterfalls like Svartifoss reveal the interaction between retreating glaciers and volcanic relief, with basalt columns bearing witness to the slow cooling of ancient lava flows. The formations of Kirkjugólf and Dverghamrar, together with the waterfalls of Foss á Síðu and Stjórnarfoss, illustrate the columnar structure of the basalts and the action of rivers cutting into volcanic plateaus. The vast lava field of Eldhraun, formed during the great fissure eruption of the Laki system in the 18th century, is one of the largest historic basaltic outpourings on Earth and profoundly transformed the landscape of southern Iceland.
