Crossing the Line

LOOKING FOR COPRODUCTION / Crossing the Line revives the lost story of Alfred Russel Wallace (the true co-discoverer of evolution) through the lens of filmmaker Jordi Escandell. He retraces Wallace’s voyage across jungles and seas to rediscover the invisible frontier that animals never cross: the Wallace Line, and the dazzling biodiversity that inspired one of science’s greatest ideas.

The Wallace Line marks a biogeographical boundary that divides the Malay Archipelago into two completely distinct worlds: Asia and Oceania. The fauna, and to a lesser extent the flora, differ on either side, despite their geographical proximity and relatively similar climates, reflecting separate evolutionary histories.

A odyssey through the Indo-Malayan Archipelago — one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth. Filmmaker Jordi Escandell, haunted by the forgotten story of Victorian explorer, sets out alone with his camera to rediscover the “Wallace Line”.

From Singapore’s concrete sprawl to Borneo’s vanishing jungles and the islands of Sulawesi and the Moluccas, Jordi captures astonishing wildlife and intimate encounters with the last forest tribes — rediscovering Wallace’s lost vision of evolution and our struggle to live within nature’s limits.
