Synopsis

The richness of biodiversity and ecological complexity within a Mediterranean ‘steppe’ is astonishing, and every creature, whether great or small, plays a precise role in this ecological system, that ultimately depends on the grazing of cows, donkeys, horses, and sheep.

Insects, birds, spiders, and plants build up a complex ecosystem that is under threat due to intensive farming and urbanization. This episode also shows the wolves which inhabit the dry grasslands of Apulia, following transhumant flocks of sheep, and the amazing hunting and breeding strategies of many species of insects and spiders.
