The Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard is a major hot spot in the Artic where the geopolitical interests of the US, the NATO, Russia and China clashes, because it is an area of enormous strategic interest. Svalbard is global warming ground zero. No part of the planet is warming faster than Svalbard and the melting ice will open up new sea routes and give access to new natural resources. It is the closest inhabited place to the North Pole, and home to the Global Seed Vault, created to save humanity's biodiversity in the event of a global catastrophe.
Two Russian settlements, Barentsburg and Pyramiden, are the geo-political pressure points of the area. The war in Ukraine has affected relations between the Russians living there and the inhabitants of the de facto capital, Longyearbyen. ‘Svalbard, Thaw and Tension’ analyses the role of Svalbard in geopolitics, in the context of the current confrontation between the West and Russia and the interests of the powers in the area.
