Synopsis

The true story behind Netflix's new feature film: "Society of the Snow".

Carlos Paez is one of the protagonists in the most shocking aeronautical tragedy in history. Together with other companions, he has to resort to cannibalism to survive. He was just 18 years old.

In October 1972, the rugby club "Old Christian" from Uruguay, rents a flight to Chile to play a friendly match, but the plane crashes in the Andes Mountains at an altitude of 3600 meters and temperatures as low as minus 25 degrees Celsius. Of the 45 people on board, 16 managed to survive for 72 days, sheltered in the remains of the fuselage.

Now Carlos is over 65 years old and returns to the site of the accident with his children and grandchildren, to give thanks and pay tribute to those that were left behind in The Valley of Tears.

Juan Antonio Bayona (‘The Impossible’ and ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’) directed Netflix's "Society of the Snow", re-telling this incredible story. After premiering on Netflix on Jan 4th, the film ranked number one in the non-English film section and was the most-viewed in the first week of 2024.
