Forced labour and contemporary slavery are not confined to poor nations—they are present even in some of the world’s most advanced economies like Canada. Many developed countries increasingly depend on the labour of migrant workers. Their rights are frequently overlooked and their working conditions are sometimes on the verge of slavery. Omar, a seasonal agricultural worker from Guatemala, is one of these people. His experience came to light when Quebecois-Chilean actor Christian de la Cortina encountered his story while researching a role as a temporary foreign worker for a fictional television series. What began as preparation for a role quickly uncovered a stark and unsettling truth: a hidden situation of labour that continues to thrive in plain sight.
